The international Douro, a border at the bottom of the canyon

For two hundred kilometres the river carves the border between Portugal and Spain. The villages stay perched, the road keeps its distance, and the viewpoints make the whole journey.

A river that serves as a border

Here the Douro is nothing like the terraced river of the postcards. It runs at the bottom of a two-hundred-metre canyon, and that cut is the border: Spain on the left bank, Portugal on the right.

The nature park protecting it carries both countries’ names. This is a land of plateau burnt by summer, of granite villages and of raptors — the density of vultures and eagles is among the highest on the peninsula.

Practical notes

When to go
April–May and September–October. Summer regularly passes 38 °C on the plateau.
Getting there
Porto three hours away, Bragança one, Zamora an hour and a half on the Spanish side.
Access
Tarmac all the way to the viewpoints; the last kilometres are sometimes narrow.
Sleeping in a van
Municipal campsite at Miranda do Douro. Overnight parking is regulated inside the nature park.
Worth knowing
You cross the border several times: keep the vehicle papers to hand.
Allow
Three days for the upper valley, six to carry on down to the wine country.

What not to miss

  1. 1Miranda do DouroAn episcopal town on the canyon rim, where Mirandese is still spoken.
  2. 2The dam and its reservoirThe point where the depth of the cut reads best.
  3. 3The Spanish-side viewpointsOften quieter, and facing the evening light.

The route in pictures

Fermoselle, on the Spanish bank: the village holds the ridge, and its cellars are cut into the rock beneath the houses.
